Executive Summary

IBM Maximo Application Suite versions 8.10 through 9.2 have a directory traversal vulnerability. This allows a remote attacker to access files outside intended directories by sending a URL with 'dot dot' sequences like /../.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves directory traversal via specially crafted URLs containing '/../' sequences. To detect it, inspect web server logs for unusual requests with '..' patterns or encoded variations like '%2e%2e%2f'. Check for unexpected file access attempts in application logs. Use tools like curl to test endpoints: curl -v 'http://target/..%2f..%2f..%2fetc/passwd' and monitor responses for file contents.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could view sensitive files on the system, potentially exposing confidential data, configuration files, or other restricted information. This could lead to data breaches or unauthorized access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and confidentiality. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest IBM Maximo Application Suite patches or updates to address the directory traversal vulnerability. Review and restrict access to sensitive files on the system. Monitor network traffic for unusual requests containing '/../' sequences.
