Executive Summary

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated users to create administrator accounts in the food-waste-management-system by manipulating the signup.php file. The system lacks authentication checks, enabling attackers to register as admins and gain full administrative privileges without any validation.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized administrator accounts in the admin table of the food-waste-management-system database. Inspect the admin/signup.php file for missing authentication checks and verify if the signup form allows public registration without validation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control over the system, including managing donations, viewing sensitive donor information, and assigning deliveries. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access, and misuse of the platform's functionality.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized access to personal data (donor PII) and lack of proper authentication controls. It could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for non-compliance with data protection regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Remove the public admin registration page (admin/signup.php) to prevent unauthorized account creation. Implement strict authentication and role-based access controls. If self-service registration is required, use an offline vetting process to approve administrators before granting access.
