Executive Summary

This is a Mass Assignment vulnerability in Jeebase 0.0.1 affecting the updateUser function in /user/update/info. The flaw allows attackers to manipulate the user/tempUser argument to modify object attributes dynamically. The issue occurs because the application accepts a client-controlled object without proper restrictions, bypassing intended field limitations.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect the /user/update/info endpoint in Jeebase 0.0.1 for improper handling of user-controlled input. Check if the updateUser method accepts unrestricted objects without field validation. Manually test by sending crafted requests to modify sensitive fields like passwords or permissions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with low privileges could escalate their access level or take over other user accounts, including administrative ones. This could lead to unauthorized data access, privilege escalation, or complete account compromise. The attack is remotely executable with no special conditions required.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized modifications, or exposure of protected health information, potentially leading to regulatory penalties and compliance failures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Jeebase to a patched version if available. If no patch exists, restrict access to the /user/update/info endpoint. Implement strict input validation to ensure only allowed fields are modified. Monitor logs for suspicious activity targeting user permissions or passwords.
