Description

A weakness has been identified in kishor-23 food-waste-management-system 411989e3ecb82895e53dca7865f72145f03d7d93/b3a70b2c492dc9904de5be1ad9389bd79b87f82c. This issue affects some unknown processing of the file signup.php of the component User Registration Endpoint. Executing a manipulation of the argument email/name/gender can lead to sql injection. The attack may be performed from remote. The exploit has been made available to the public and could be used for attacks. This product utilizes a rolling release system for continuous delivery, and as such, version information for affected or updated releases is not disclosed. The project was informed of the problem early through an issue report but has not responded yet.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated boolean-based blind SQL injection in the food-waste-management-system. It occurs in the signup.php file where unescaped POST parameters like email, name, and gender are directly inserted into SQL queries without sanitization or prepared statements. The database uses a MySQL root account with no password, allowing attackers to dump the entire database or modify data remotely.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor HTTP POST requests to /signup.php with parameters like email, name, or gender. Use tools like sqlmap to test for boolean-based blind SQL injection by sending crafted payloads such as email=test' AND 1=1-- or email=test' AND 1=2--. Check application logs for unusual database query patterns or errors indicating SQL syntax issues.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to extract sensitive data like password hashes, modify database records, or create fake accounts. Since the endpoint is unauthenticated, anyone can send crafted requests to compromise the system. The lack of input validation and root-level database access increases the risk of full system takeover.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access and potential exposure of personal information. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguards for health-related data. The lack of encryption and input validation exacerbates compliance risks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the application to use prepared statements for all SQL queries. Sanitize and validate all user inputs, especially for email, name, and gender parameters. Replace the MySQL root account with a dedicated database user with restricted privileges. Disable unauthenticated access to /signup.php if possible or implement authentication checks.
