CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an unauthenticated boolean-based blind SQL injection in the admin/signup.php file of the food-waste-management-system. It occurs because the application directly inserts raw POST data into SQL queries without proper escaping or prepared statements. Attackers can manipulate database queries by submitting crafted input to the email, username, or location fields, leading to potential data theft or manipulation.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, monitor for unusual POST requests to /admin/signup.php with payloads testing boolean-based blind SQLi. Check server logs for responses like 'Account already exists' or 'data not saved' indicating true/false conditions. Use tools like sqlmap with: sqlmap -u 'http://target/admin/signup.php' --data='email=test@test.com' --batch --level=5 --risk=3

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to retrieve all database contents, including admin password hashes and user records. They might also inject malicious data into the admin table, potentially gaining unauthorized access to the system. The vulnerability allows remote attacks without authentication.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized disclosure of personal or health information, and non-compliance with regulatory obligations for data security and privacy.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately restrict public access to /admin/signup.php via web server rules. Implement prepared statements for all SQL queries in admin/signup.php. Disable unauthenticated admin registration if possible. Review database user permissions to ensure least privilege. Monitor for exploitation attempts in logs.
