CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL injection flaw in the Online Appointment Booking System. It exists in the patient login handler (cover.php) where user inputs for username and password are directly used in a SQL query without sanitization. Attackers can exploit this by injecting malicious SQL code, such as ' OR '1'='1, to bypass authentication and gain unauthorized access to patient accounts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability, inspect the cover.php file in the Online Appointment Booking System for improper handling of user inputs (uname/psw). Check if credentials are directly concatenated into SQL queries without sanitization or prepared statements. Test with payloads like ' OR '1'='1 in login fields to see if authentication is bypassed.

Impact Analysis

If you use this system, an attacker could exploit this flaw to log in as any patient without valid credentials. This could allow them to view, book, or cancel appointments on your behalf, access your personal data, or perform other unauthorized actions within the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. It exposes patient data to unauthorized access, which could lead to breaches of confidentiality and privacy regulations, potentially resulting in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the system to use prepared statements for all SQL queries. Sanitize user inputs by validating and escaping special characters. Restrict database user permissions to limit damage from potential exploits. Monitor logs for suspicious login attempts or unauthorized access.
