Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Regular Expression Denial of Service (ReDoS) issue in Ghost CMS versions 4.0.0 to 6.65.0. A crafted content import file can cause excessive CPU usage, making the server unresponsive. It requires Administrator access to exploit and was fixed in version 6.67.0.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring for excessive CPU usage during Ghost import operations. Check Ghost server logs for import processes that hang or consume abnormally high CPU. Use system monitoring tools like top, htop, or ps to observe CPU spikes during import tasks. If Ghost is running in Docker, use docker stats to monitor container resource usage.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can make your Ghost server unresponsive due to high CPU usage, disrupting service availability. Since it requires Administrator access, only users with elevated privileges can exploit it. Self-hosted users should update to version 6.67.0 or later to mitigate the risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts availability by causing excessive CPU usage, which could lead to server unresponsiveness. It does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity of data. Compliance impact depends on system downtime duration and data accessibility during incidents. Standards like GDPR and HIPAA require maintaining data availability and security, so prolonged outages could pose compliance risks if they disrupt access to personal or health data.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Ghost to version 6.67.0 or later immediately. For self-hosted users, use Docker or Ghost-CLI to apply the patch.
