Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Ghost, a Node.js content management system, between versions 1.20.0 and 6.64.0. It allows an authenticated Administrator to read JSON files outside the active theme's directory through a path traversal attack via the locale setting. This could expose sensitive server configuration secrets.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Ghost versions between 1.20.0 and 6.64.0. Run 'ghost version' in your Ghost instance to verify the installed version. If the version is within the vulnerable range, the system is potentially affected.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with Administrator access could exploit this to read sensitive files on the server, potentially exposing secrets like API keys, database credentials, or other configuration details. This could lead to further compromise of the system or data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (health information privacy). Exposure of configuration secrets or user data could result in regulatory penalties or legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Ghost to version 6.64.0 or later. Use the command 'ghost update' to upgrade. Ensure backups are taken before updating. Remove unnecessary Administrator access to reduce attack surface.
