Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a path traversal issue in Ghost CMS versions 6.14.0 to 6.27.0. It allows staff users with high privileges to access local files outside the intended storage directories on the server. The flaw stems from improper path validation in file storage operations, which could let attackers read or manipulate files beyond the designated storage root.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Ghost CMS version is between 6.14.0 and 6.27.0. Use the command: ghost version. If the version is within this range, the system may be vulnerable. Additionally, review server logs for unusual file access patterns or attempts to traverse directories using paths containing .. or starting with /.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow unauthorized access to sensitive files on the server, such as configuration files, user data, or other confidential information. Attackers with staff privileges could read, modify, or delete files outside the intended storage directories, potentially leading to data breaches or system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with data protection regulations like GDPR or HIPAA by exposing sensitive personal or health data stored on the server. Unauthorized access to such data may result in legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust. Organizations must ensure systems are patched to maintain compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Ghost CMS to version 6.27.0 or later. Use the command: ghost update. Ensure all staff users have only necessary privileges and review file access permissions. Monitor for any unauthorized file access attempts.
