Command Injection in Penpot SVG Exporter

Description

Penpot is an open-source design and prototyping platform. Prior to 2.18.0, the SVG exporter places an attacker-controlled text object's fill-color value into a ppmcolormask command string and executes that string through child_process.exec. A user who can edit a file can store shell metacharacters in the fill color and trigger SVG export, causing commands to execute with the exporter service's privileges. The same export can be triggered through a valid public share link to a malicious file. This vulnerability is fixed in 2.18.0.

Executive Summary

This is an OS command injection vulnerability in Penpot's SVG exporter. Attackers with file edit permissions can inject shell metacharacters into the text fill-color property. When SVG export is triggered, the unvalidated input is passed to child_process.exec(), allowing arbitrary command execution with the exporter service's privileges.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Penpot instance is running a version prior to 2.18.0. Use commands like 'penpot version' or inspect the version in the application settings. Additionally, monitor for unusual command execution patterns in logs, especially related to SVG exports.

Impact Analysis

If you use Penpot versions 2.17.1 or earlier, an attacker with file edit access could execute arbitrary commands on your system through the SVG export feature. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or further network infiltration. Even without edit access, attackers could exploit it via malicious share links.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable Penpot versions may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade Penpot to version 2.18.0 or later. Disable public share links for untrusted users until the upgrade is complete. Review and restrict file edit permissions to trusted users only.
