Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a broken authentication flaw in the admin change-password feature of PHPGurukul User Registration & Login and User Management System 3.3. The system fails to validate the current password against the authenticated admin's session ID. Instead, it checks if the provided current password matches any admin account in the database. If multiple admin accounts exist, an attacker can use any valid admin password to bypass validation and change the password for the currently logged-in admin account.

Detection Guidance

Check if the application uses the vulnerable change-password.php file in the loginsystem/admin/ directory. Review authentication logs for unauthorized password change attempts. Inspect database queries for improper session-based validation of current passwords.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthorized users to change the password of an admin account without knowing the original password. If exploited, it could lead to account takeover, unauthorized access to sensitive data, and potential system compromise. Attackers could gain full administrative control over the application.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the change-password.php logic to validate the current password against the session user's account by including the session admin ID in the validation query. Ensure no admin accounts share passwords and enforce strong password policies.
