Docling Path Traversal via xlink:href in ODF Images

Description

Docling simplifies document processing by parsing diverse formats and providing integrations with the generative AI ecosystem. From 2.107.0 until 2.120.3, docling/backend/opendocument_backend.py uses the xlink:href attribute value of a draw:image element as a filesystem path when the referenced part is not found in the document archive. The _image_ref_from_odf_image function reads that attacker-controlled path without a scheme check, extraction-directory confinement, or the enable_local_fetch setting used by other backends. Readable files that Pillow can decode as images are embedded in converted output, and other existing paths can be distinguished through the attempted read. This issue is fixed in 2.120.3.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability exists in Docling versions 2.107.0 to 2.120.3. It involves improper handling of the xlink:href attribute in draw:image elements within ODF documents. When a referenced part is missing, the system uses the attribute value directly as a filesystem path without proper validation. This allows attackers to control file paths, potentially reading arbitrary files that Pillow can decode as images and embedding them in converted output.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking for Docling versions between 2.107.0 and 2.120.3. Inspect the docling/backend/opendocument_backend.py file for the _image_ref_from_odf_image function. Look for improper handling of xlink:href attribute values as filesystem paths without proper validation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on your system if they can provide a malicious ODF document. This includes files that Pillow can process as images. While arbitrary code execution is not possible, information disclosure is a significant risk, especially for files accessible to the Docling process.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's requirements for safeguarding protected health information. Organizations processing documents with Docling may face compliance violations if this flaw is exploited to access regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Docling to version 2.120.3 or later to address the vulnerability in the opendocument backend.
