Description

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. Payload versions from 3.0.0 before 3.90.0 and canary versions from 4.0.0-canary.0 before 4.0.0-canary.34 use a lower-than-recommended PBKDF2 work factor for password hashing, reducing the computational effort required to test recovered password hashes. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Executive Summary

Payload CMS versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34 use a weak PBKDF2 work factor for password hashing. This reduces the computational effort needed to crack password hashes, making it easier for attackers to recover passwords.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to recover user passwords more easily, potentially gaining unauthorized access to accounts. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized content changes, or further compromise of the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability may violate data protection requirements under GDPR and HIPAA, which mandate strong security controls for protecting user data. Weak password hashing could lead to non-compliance and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Payload CMS to version 3.90.0 or later for stable releases, or 4.0.0-canary.34 or later for canary releases to fix the weak PBKDF2 password hashing issue.
