Description

ImageMagick before 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55 contains an uncontrolled recursion vulnerability in the CALS decoder due to a missing depth check. Attackers can supply a crafted CALS image that triggers unbounded recursion, exhausting the stack and crashing the process, resulting in a denial of service.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an uncontrolled recursion flaw in ImageMagick's CALS decoder. It occurs because the software fails to check the depth of nested structures in CALS images. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted image that causes infinite recursion, leading to stack exhaustion and process crashes, resulting in a denial of service.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the installed ImageMagick version. Use the command 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to verify if your version is below 7.1.2-30 or 6.9.13-55. If so, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause system crashes by exhausting the stack when processing malicious CALS images. It requires no privileges or user interaction and can be triggered remotely over a network. The impact includes service disruption due to process termination.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability causes a denial of service by crashing the ImageMagick process through stack exhaustion, which could disrupt systems processing images. While not directly violating GDPR or HIPAA, such disruptions may impact availability of systems handling personal or health data, potentially leading to compliance issues if critical services are affected.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-30 or later for the 7.x branch, or 6.9.13-55 or later for the 6.x branch. If updating is not possible, disable processing of CALS images by removing or restricting access to the CALS decoder module.
