Path Traversal in lrzsz Receive Utility

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-105840, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-06

Last updated on: 2026-10-06

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

lrzsz before 0.13.0 contains a path traversal vulnerability in the lrz receive utility's restricted mode that allows malicious ZMODEM senders to write files outside the current directory using absolute pathnames. Because checkpath() in src/lrz.c only rejects '../' sequences unless built with --enable-pubdir, attackers can send files named with absolute paths to overwrite any file writable by the receiving user.

CWE ID Description
CWE-22 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that is intended to identify a file or directory that is located underneath a restricted parent directory, but the product does not properly neutralize special elements within the pathname that can cause the pathname to resolve to a location that is outside of the restricted directory.

Executive Summary

lrzsz before 0.13.0 has a path traversal flaw in its lrz receive utility when running in restricted mode. Attackers can exploit this by sending files with absolute pathnames via ZMODEM protocol to write outside the intended directory. The checkpath() function in src/lrz.c fails to block these paths unless compiled with --enable-pubdir.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if lrzsz is installed and its version. Run 'lrz --version' or 'lsz --version' to see the version. If the version is before 0.13.0, the system is vulnerable. Also inspect scripts or services using lrzsz in restricted mode for absolute path usage.

Impact Analysis

If you use lrzsz to receive files in restricted mode, an attacker could overwrite critical system files, configuration files, or sensitive user data. This could lead to system compromise, data loss, or unauthorized access depending on the files targeted.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized file access or modification, violating data integrity and confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected lrzsz versions may face compliance violations if sensitive data is exposed or altered.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update lrzsz to version 0.13.0 or later. If updating is not possible, disable the use of lrzsz in restricted mode or rebuild it with --enable-pubdir. Remove or restrict access to any scripts or services using lrzsz with absolute paths.
