Description

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions from 3.0.0 before 3.88.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.27, an untrusted user who can query readable collections through dynamic filters or joins can submit a request that causes SQL injection in the SQLite and Postgres adapters. This issue is fixed in versions 3.88.0 and 4.0.0-canary.27.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Payload CMS versions 3.0.0 to 3.88.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.27 have a SQL injection vulnerability. Untrusted users can exploit dynamic filters or joins in readable collections to submit malicious requests that execute arbitrary SQL commands in SQLite and Postgres databases.

Detection Guidance

To detect this SQL injection vulnerability in Payload CMS, inspect network traffic for suspicious queries targeting SQLite or Postgres databases. Check application logs for unusual database errors or payloads containing SQL keywords like UNION, SELECT, or semicolons. Use tools like sqlmap to test inputs for injection points. Ensure Payload CMS is updated to versions 3.88.0 or 4.0.0-canary.27 or later.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to read, modify, or delete database contents, potentially gaining full control over the CMS. It could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to sensitive information, or complete system compromise if exploited.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access risks. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health information. Exploitation could lead to non-compliance, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Payload CMS to version 3.88.0 or later for the stable release, or to version 4.0.0-canary.27 or later for the canary release. This addresses the SQL injection vulnerability in SQLite and Postgres adapters.
