Description

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions from 3.0.0 before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, a user who can query a collection with a polymorphic join to sensitive fields can infer hidden or read-restricted values, including password-reset tokens, through polymorphic join filters. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Payload CMS versions from 3.0.0 before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34. It allows a user to query a collection with a polymorphic join to sensitive fields and infer hidden or read-restricted values, such as password-reset tokens, through polymorphic join filters.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability requires checking Payload CMS versions for exposure. Run commands like 'npm list payloadcms' or check version in package.json to verify if your system is running a vulnerable version (3.0.0 to 3.90.0 or canary before 4.0.0-canary.34).

No direct detection commands are provided in the CVE details. Focus on version checks and review polymorphic join queries in your CMS for sensitive field access.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with query access could exploit this to discover sensitive data like password-reset tokens, potentially leading to unauthorized account access or further compromise of the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to exposure of personal or protected health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Update Payload CMS to version 3.90.0 or later for the 3.x branch, or to version 4.0.0-canary.34 or later for the canary branch. This addresses the polymorphic join filter issue that allows unauthorized data inference.
