Description

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, a crafted request to the public first-register operation can execute code remotely when local authentication is enabled and no initial user has been created. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Payload, a free and open source headless content management system. In versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, a specially crafted request to the public first-register operation can allow remote code execution if local authentication is enabled and no initial user has been created.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Payload CMS version is before 3.90.0 or canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34. Use commands like 'npm list payloadcms' or check the version in the admin panel. If vulnerable, update immediately.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary code on the server running the vulnerable Payload instance. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, or further network infiltration depending on the server's environment and permissions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows remote code execution (RCE) under specific conditions, which could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or data manipulation. Such breaches may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (healthcare data security) by exposing sensitive user or patient data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Payload CMS to version 3.90.0 or later if using the stable release, or to version 4.0.0-canary.34 or later if using the canary release. This addresses the crafted request vulnerability in the first-register operation.
