Description

Payload is a free and open source headless content management system. In @payloadcms/plugin-multi-tenant versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34, an authenticated user limited to one tenant can create a record in another tenant when at least one tenant-enabled collection exists. Reads and direct edits of existing documents in the target tenant are not bypassed. This issue is fixed in versions 3.90.0 and 4.0.0-canary.34.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Payload, a free and open source headless content management system. It exists in the @payloadcms/plugin-multi-tenant plugin versions before 3.90.0 and canary versions before 4.0.0-canary.34. An authenticated user restricted to one tenant can create a record in another tenant if at least one tenant-enabled collection exists. Existing documents in the target tenant are not directly editable or readable through this flaw.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of @payloadcms/plugin-multi-tenant. If it is below 3.90.0 or 4.0.0-canary.34, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like npm list @payloadcms/plugin-multi-tenant or check package.json to verify the installed version.

Impact Analysis

If you use Payload with the multi-tenant plugin in affected versions, an attacker with limited access could create unauthorized records in other tenants. This could lead to data leakage, unauthorized modifications, or disruption of services within your multi-tenant environment.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could impact compliance by allowing unauthorized data access or modifications across tenants. For GDPR, it may violate data integrity and access control requirements. For HIPAA, it could compromise protected health information segregation. Organizations must ensure tenant isolation to meet regulatory standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Update @payloadcms/plugin-multi-tenant to version 3.90.0 or later if using stable releases. For canary versions, update to 4.0.0-canary.34 or later. This addresses the tenant isolation bypass issue.
