CWE ID Description
CWE-74 The product constructs all or part of a command, data structure, or record using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify how it is parsed or interpreted when it is sent to a downstream component.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an SQL injection flaw in the Kusalkasilva Learning-Management-System. It exists in the admin/login.php file, specifically in the mysql_query function used for administrator login. Attackers can manipulate the username and password inputs to inject malicious SQL code, allowing unauthorized database access or manipulation.

Detection Guidance

Detecting SQL injection vulnerabilities like this one typically involves checking for unusual input handling in web forms or APIs. Inspect the admin/login.php file for improperly sanitized username/password inputs. Use tools like SQLmap to test for SQL injection flaws by sending crafted payloads to the login endpoint.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to bypass authentication, steal sensitive data like user credentials or personal information, modify or delete database records, or gain full control of the system. Since the exploit is public, the risk of real-world attacks is significant.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data breaches requiring notification) and HIPAA (unauthorized access to protected health information). Organizations using this system may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and loss of trust due to compromised data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update or patch the Learning-Management-System to address the SQL injection flaw. If no patch is available, disable the affected login endpoint or restrict access to trusted IPs. Implement input validation and use prepared statements for database queries to prevent SQL injection.
