Description

GitAhead through 2.7.1 on macOS contains a command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute shell commands by crafting repository filenames interpolated unescaped into the Show in Finder AppleScript. Attackers can commit a file whose path contains a double quote followed by a do shell script payload, which runs as the victim user when Show in Finder is chosen.

Executive Summary

GitAhead through 2.7.1 on macOS has a command injection flaw in its 'Show in Finder' feature. Attackers can craft repository filenames with AppleScript escape sequences, like a double quote followed by a shell command. When a user selects 'Show in Finder' for such a file, the unescaped filename is passed into an AppleScript command executed via osascript, allowing arbitrary shell commands to run with the user's privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check GitAhead versions for 2.7.1 or earlier on macOS. Look for files with crafted filenames containing double quotes followed by shell commands. Review AppleScript logs for unexpected 'osascript' executions.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to execute arbitrary shell commands on your macOS system with your user privileges. If you open a malicious repository and use 'Show in Finder' on a crafted file, the attacker can run commands like installing malware, stealing data, or modifying files. The attack requires user interaction but can be triggered remotely if you clone a malicious repository.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data exfiltration, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations using GitAhead may face compliance breaches if attackers exploit this flaw to access sensitive data, potentially resulting in legal penalties or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid using GitAhead's 'Show in Finder' feature until patched. Update to the latest version if available. Manually inspect repository files for suspicious filenames. Disable AppleScript execution if not required.
