Description

A heap-based buffer overflow was found in GIMP’s raw data export plug-in. When exporting very large images, g_malloc() sizing based on overflowing width * height * bytes-per-pixel can allocate far less memory than GEGL reads or writes during export, following integer overflow

CWE ID Description
CWE-119 The product performs operations on a memory buffer, but it reads from or writes to a memory location outside the buffer's intended boundary. This may result in read or write operations on unexpected memory locations that could be linked to other variables, data structures, or internal program data.

Executive Summary

This is a heap-based buffer overflow in GIMP's raw data export plug-in. When exporting very large images, the calculation for memory allocation (width * height * bytes-per-pixel) can overflow, causing insufficient memory to be allocated. This leads to GEGL reading or writing beyond the allocated buffer during export, resulting in a heap-based out-of-bounds write.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for GIMP installations and monitoring for crashes during large image exports. Look for GIMP processes using high memory during export operations. Check GIMP logs for errors related to raw data export or memory allocation failures.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash GIMP, corrupt memory, or potentially execute arbitrary code. The vulnerability requires an oversized image to trigger, so opening or exporting untrusted or abnormally large images may pose a risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system integrity and availability by allowing arbitrary code execution or memory corruption during image export. While not directly tied to data privacy, exploitation could lead to unauthorized access or data exfiltration, indirectly affecting compliance with standards like GDPR or HIPAA that require data protection and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid exporting raw data from untrusted or abnormally large images. Validate image dimensions before automated exports. Disable or restrict GIMP's raw export plugin if possible. Monitor GIMP for crashes during export operations as a potential indicator of exploitation.
