Integer Underflow in MongoDB libmongocrypt KMS Parsing

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-106429, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-08

Last updated on: 2026-10-08

Assigner: MongoDB, Inc.

Description

An integer underflow in the KMS endpoint-parsing logic of MongoDB libmongocrypt can cause an allocation failure that terminates the application process. This can occur when an authenticated user modifies a key document in the key vault collection, or when an application accepts a KMS endpoint containing a colon after its path or query during key creation. The issue does not access memory outside its allocated bounds.

Executive Summary

An integer underflow in the KMS endpoint-parsing logic of MongoDB libmongocrypt causes an allocation failure that terminates the application process. This happens when an authenticated user modifies a key document in the key vault collection or when an application accepts a KMS endpoint with a colon after its path or query during key creation.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves an integer underflow in MongoDB libmongocrypt's KMS endpoint-parsing logic. Detection requires checking for crashes in applications using libmongocrypt during key vault operations or KMS endpoint processing. Monitor logs for application terminations during key document modifications or KMS endpoint parsing.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause application crashes, leading to denial of service. It may disrupt services relying on MongoDB libmongocrypt for key management, especially in environments where key documents are frequently modified or KMS endpoints are dynamically configured.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by causing application termination during key vault operations, leading to disruptions in data encryption processes. Unauthorized termination may result in incomplete or failed encryption of sensitive data, which could violate requirements for data protection and integrity under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update MongoDB libmongocrypt to the latest patched version to address the integer underflow issue in KMS endpoint parsing.
