Description

Backstage is an open framework for building developer portals. Prior to 0.21.9, the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package is affected by sensitive information disclosure in kubernetes resource queries. An authenticated user holding the standard Kubernetes resource read permission could retrieve sensitive values that the Kubernetes plugin is designed to mask, potentially exposing credentials and other confidential material held in the connected clusters. Exposure is limited to resources that the Backstage service account is permitted to read and that match the targeted catalog entity's namespace and label selector. Deployments whose cluster credentials do not grant read access to these resources are unaffected. This issue is fixed in version 0.21.9.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-106561 is a sensitive information disclosure vulnerability in the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package of Backstage. It allows authenticated users with Kubernetes resource read permissions to retrieve masked sensitive data like credentials from connected clusters. The issue occurs when the Backstage service account can read resources matching specific namespace and label selectors.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Backstage instance is running a version of the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package prior to 0.21.9. Run: npm list @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend. If the version is below 0.21.9, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with read access could expose confidential information such as passwords, tokens, or API keys stored in Kubernetes Secrets. This could lead to unauthorized access to systems, data breaches, or further exploitation of the environment. The impact is limited to resources the Backstage service account can read.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized exposure of sensitive personal or health data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package to version 0.21.9 or later. Apply RBAC restrictions to limit the Backstage service account's read permissions on sensitive Kubernetes resources. Enable the permission framework and restrict access to trusted users only.
