Description

Backstage is an open framework for building developer portals. Prior to 0.21.8, the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package is affected by improper entity validation in deprecated kubernetes services endpoint. An authenticated user with Kubernetes read permissions could access Kubernetes workload data beyond their intended scope by supplying crafted entity data to the deprecated services endpoint. The exposure is limited to read-only access to Kubernetes object metadata across configured clusters. This issue is fixed in version 0.21.8.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-106563 is an improper entity validation flaw in the deprecated Kubernetes services endpoint of the @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend package. It allows authenticated users with Kubernetes read permissions to access Kubernetes workload metadata beyond their intended scope by submitting crafted entity data.

Detection Guidance

Check Backstage plugin versions using npm list @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend. If version is below 0.21.8, the system is vulnerable. Inspect Kubernetes logs for unauthorized access attempts to deprecated endpoints or unusual metadata queries across clusters.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive Kubernetes object metadata across configured clusters, potentially exposing internal service details, configurations, or other metadata. This is limited to read-only access but may aid further attacks if combined with other vulnerabilities.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's access controls for protected health information. Compliance risks include potential fines or penalties for failing to protect sensitive metadata.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade @backstage/plugin-kubernetes-backend to version 0.21.8 or later. Alternatively, disable the deprecated endpoint via a custom Kubernetes router or restrict the kubernetes.resources.read permission to prevent unauthorized access.
