Description

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-32, a crafted EXR image can cause the EXR decoder to write beyond a heap buffer, causing the process to crash. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2-32.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in ImageMagick involves a crafted EXR image that can cause the EXR decoder to write beyond a heap buffer, leading to a crash. It affects versions prior to 7.1.2-32 and is fixed in that version.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick on your system. Run the command 'magick --version' or 'convert --version' to see the version number. If the version is below 7.1.2-32, your system is vulnerable. Additionally, monitor for crashes when processing EXR images, as this may indicate exploitation attempts.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability can cause the ImageMagick process to crash when processing a specially crafted EXR image. This may lead to denial of service if the application relies on ImageMagick for image processing.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts system availability due to crashes caused by crafted EXR images. It does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity of data. Compliance with GDPR or HIPAA would depend on whether the affected ImageMagick versions are used in systems processing personal or health data, but the vulnerability itself does not inherently violate these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-32 or later. This can be done by downloading the latest release from the official ImageMagick website or using your package manager to upgrade. After updating, verify the new version is installed and restart any services using ImageMagick.
