Description

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-31, a client connected to the distributed pixel cache server can send crafted pixel data that triggers an integer-size calculation error and a heap buffer overwrite, crashing the server. This issue is fixed in version 7.1.2-31.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-190 The product performs a calculation that can produce an integer overflow or wraparound when the logic assumes that the resulting value will always be larger than the original value. This occurs when an integer value is incremented to a value that is too large to store in the associated representation. When this occurs, the value may become a very small or negative number.
CWE-131 The product does not correctly calculate the size to be used when allocating a buffer, which could lead to a buffer overflow.
CWE-125 The product reads data past the end, or before the beginning, of the intended buffer.
CWE-122 A heap overflow condition is a buffer overflow, where the buffer that can be overwritten is allocated in the heap portion of memory, generally meaning that the buffer was allocated using a routine such as malloc().

Executive Summary

ImageMagick before version 7.1.2-31 has a vulnerability where a client connected to the distributed pixel cache server can send crafted pixel data. This triggers an integer-size calculation error leading to a heap buffer overwrite, which crashes the server.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of ImageMagick. If it is below 7.1.2-31, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to verify the version. Monitor server logs for crashes or errors related to pixel cache handling.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause the distributed pixel cache server to crash, leading to denial of service. It does not allow code execution or data theft but disrupts service availability for image processing tasks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily causes server crashes due to heap buffer overflows in ImageMagick's distributed pixel cache server. It does not directly impact data confidentiality or integrity but could lead to denial-of-service conditions. Compliance with GDPR or HIPAA may be indirectly affected if the crash disrupts processing of personal or health data, potentially violating availability requirements under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-31 or later to fix the vulnerability. Disable the distributed pixel cache server if not needed to reduce attack surface.
