Description

A flaw has been found in **permission filters** in the **foreman** package. The API loads a filter by its identifier and does not apply the search limit on the caller's permission. A low-privileged network attacker or user must already be allowed to delete filters for one role only. They can delete filters that belong to other unlocked roles. Those other roles then lose the access the deleted filters had granted.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in the foreman package's permission filters. The API loads a filter by its identifier but does not apply the caller's search permission limits. A low-privileged user with permission to delete filters for one role can delete filters belonging to other unlocked roles, causing those roles to lose granted access.

Detection Guidance

Check Foreman audit logs for unauthorized filter deletions or modifications. Review API access logs for suspicious filter-related API calls. Use commands like 'grep -i "filter" /var/log/foreman/production.log' to search for filter operations.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with limited privileges could delete filters on roles outside their allowed scope, causing unauthorized loss of access for other users or roles. This could disrupt operations by revoking necessary permissions without detection.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access changes, potentially violating access control requirements in GDPR or HIPAA. Loss of permissions may result in unauthorized data exposure or denial of critical services, impacting compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Audit all filter creation, updates, and deletions. Review recent audit records for unauthorized changes. Remove delegated filter administration permissions from untrusted roles until a patch is applied. Monitor for unexpected access loss in roles.
