Description

An **incorrect authorization** flaw has been found in **network interface handling** in the **Foreman** package. The domain and subnet interface API checks only that the caller holds a host permission. It does not apply the search limit on that permission, so the request is answered from every interface on the domain or subnet. A low-privileged network attacker or user must already be allowed to view some hosts and to view a domain or subnet shared with other hosts. They can request that domain or subnet's interfaces. The response includes interface records of hosts they are not allowed to view. If the attacker or user is also allowed to edit some hosts, they can submit a change to one of those interfaces. The interface is then saved with that change.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an incorrect authorization flaw in Foreman's network interface handling. The domain and subnet interface API fails to apply proper search limits on host permissions. A low-privileged user with limited host view permissions can bypass these restrictions and access or modify interface details of hosts they are not authorized to view.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, review Foreman logs for unauthorized interface access attempts. Check API calls to domain or subnet interface endpoints (/api/v2/domains/:id/interfaces, /api/v2/subnets/:id/interfaces) for users with view_hosts permissions but no legitimate need to access those interfaces.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with specific permissions could read sensitive interface details like IP addresses, MAC addresses, and hostnames of unauthorized hosts. If they have edit permissions, they could modify these interface fields, potentially altering network configurations or causing disruptions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive host interface data, potentially violating data protection requirements under GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized modifications to network interfaces might also breach compliance with network security standards.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Apply the latest Foreman security patches immediately once available from Red Hat.
  • Review and restrict host permissions to ensure users cannot view domains or subnets shared with unauthorized hosts.
  • Monitor interface API requests for suspicious activity, especially from low-privileged users.
