Description

LMCache through 0.5.5 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in its frontend monitoring service that allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass the proxy allowlist by registering arbitrary hosts. Attackers can add entries via POST /api/proxies and then use /proxy or /proxy2 to reach internal hosts, read responses, and tamper with nodes or stop the heartbeat.

Executive Summary

LMCache through version 0.5.5 has a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in its frontend monitoring service. This flaw allows unauthenticated attackers to bypass the proxy allowlist by registering arbitrary hosts through a POST request to /api/proxies. Attackers can then use endpoints like /proxy or /proxy2 to access internal hosts, read responses, tamper with nodes, or disrupt the heartbeat service.

Detection Guidance

Check if LMCache version 0.5.5 or earlier is running by inspecting installed packages or service logs. Look for unauthorized POST requests to /api/proxies or access to /proxy or /proxy2 endpoints from unexpected sources. Monitor network traffic for internal host connections initiated by the LMCache frontend service.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can allow attackers to access internal hosts, read sensitive data, tamper with nodes, or stop the heartbeat service. It may lead to unauthorized access to internal systems, data exfiltration, or disruption of services relying on LMCache.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance with data protection regulations, and potential legal consequences due to compromised data integrity and availability.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade to a patched version of LMCache if available. If no patch exists, restrict network access to the LMCache frontend service by binding it to localhost only. Implement strict input validation for proxy host and port parameters. Disable or remove the /api/proxies, /proxy, and /proxy2 endpoints if not required.
