Description

ImageMagick is free and open-source software used for editing and manipulating digital images. Prior to 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55, a crafted highly compressed MAT image can make the MAT decoder create temporary files larger than the configured security-policy limit, bypassing resource restrictions and consuming excessive disk space. This issue is fixed in versions 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in ImageMagick involves a crafted highly compressed MAT image that causes the MAT decoder to create temporary files larger than the configured security-policy limit. This bypasses resource restrictions and consumes excessive disk space. It affects versions prior to 7.1.2-30 and 6.9.13-55.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your ImageMagick version is prior to 7.1.2-30 or 6.9.13-55. Run 'convert --version' or 'magick --version' to verify the installed version. If the version is outdated, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can lead to denial-of-service conditions by consuming excessive disk space. It may also cause system slowdowns or crashes due to resource exhaustion. The impact is limited to availability as it does not allow code execution or data access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could indirectly impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA by enabling denial-of-service conditions through excessive disk space consumption. GDPR requires data protection measures to ensure availability, while HIPAA mandates safeguards against resource exhaustion attacks. The issue may lead to system instability, potentially violating availability requirements in these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade ImageMagick to version 7.1.2-30 or later for ImageMagick 7, or to 6.9.13-55 or later for ImageMagick 6. This addresses the improper handling of highly compressed MAT images that cause excessive disk usage.
