Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves missing authorization checks in Amazon Athena engine version 3. An authenticated user could read limited query metadata, such as AWS account identifiers and SQL statement text, from other AWS accounts. Query results, credentials, and Amazon S3 data were not affected.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves missing authorization checks in Amazon Athena engine version 3. Detection requires reviewing AWS CloudTrail logs for unusual query metadata access across accounts. Check Athena API calls for unauthorized access attempts to query metadata from other accounts. No specific commands are provided as this is an AWS-managed service issue.

Impact Analysis

The impact is limited to exposure of metadata like AWS account IDs and SQL queries. No sensitive data like query results, credentials, or S3 data were accessible. AWS confirmed no customer metadata was accessed, and no action is required.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability did not expose sensitive data like personal or health information, so direct impact on GDPR or HIPAA compliance is unlikely. However, unauthorized access to metadata could theoretically raise concerns about data handling practices, though AWS confirmed no such access occurred.

Mitigation Strategies

AWS has already remediated the issue on September 1, 2026. No customer action is required as query results, credentials, and Amazon S3 data were not affected. Monitor AWS advisories for any updates and ensure your Athena engine version is updated to the latest patch.
