Smart List Takeover in Stump via GraphQL Mutations

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-107450, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-08

Last updated on: 2026-10-08

Assigner: MITRE

Description

In Stump through 0.1.10, the updateSmartList and deleteSmartList GraphQL mutations (crates/graphql/src/mutation/smart_lists.rs) depend only on the shared AccessSmartList permission and resolve the target list at Reader access (lacking a creator check). Any authenticated user with that permission can overwrite, delete, or take over another user's smart list. (updateSmartList sets creatorId to the caller identity, and can set visibility to PRIVATE, locking out the original owner.) NOTE: this is unrelated to the graphql crate on crates.io.

Executive Summary

This is a Broken Access Control (BOLA) vulnerability in Stump, a self-hosted media server. It affects the updateSmartList and deleteSmartList GraphQL mutations in versions up to 0.1.10. The flaw allows any authenticated user with the AccessSmartList permission to modify or delete another user's smart list without proper ownership verification. Attackers can overwrite, delete, or take over lists by reassigning the creator to themselves and setting visibility to private, locking out the original owner.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized modifications or deletions of smart lists in Stump's GraphQL API logs. Look for GraphQL mutations updateSmartList or deleteSmartList executed by users who are not the original creator. Review access logs for any user with AccessSmartList permission performing actions on lists they do not own.

Impact Analysis

If you use Stump <= 0.1.10, an attacker with AccessSmartList permission could delete or modify your smart lists, including private ones. They could take over your lists by changing ownership and visibility settings, preventing you from accessing your own content. This could lead to data loss or unauthorized access to your media collections.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements for data integrity and access controls. GDPR requires proper data access controls and user consent for data handling. HIPAA mandates strict access controls for protected health information. The lack of ownership verification could lead to unauthorized data modification or deletion, potentially violating these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Stump to a version beyond 0.1.10 where this issue is fixed. If upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict the AccessSmartList permission to only trusted users and audit existing smart lists for unauthorized changes. Implement additional ownership verification in GraphQL mutations.
