Description

Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) protection in the UrlImageConverter component of Apache Fesod (Incubating) fesod-sheet 2.0.2-incubating can be bypassed through DNS rebinding. When an application accepts an attacker-controlled image URL for spreadsheet writing, the converter checks the hostname's resolved IP addresses and then opens a separate connection that can resolve the hostname again. An attacker who controls DNS responses for the URL hostname may cause the connection to reach a restricted address after validation. CVE-2026-49328 covers SSRF in releases before 2.0.2-incubating; this issue is a DNS rebinding bypass of the protection in 2.0.2-incubating. Apache Fesod (Incubating) 2.1.0-incubating addresses the reported default-fetch scenario by disabling remote URL image fetching by default and requiring an explicit exact-host allowlist when the feature is enabled. Users should upgrade to 2.1.0-incubating. Applications enabling remote URL image fetching should allowlist only hostnames whose DNS and HTTP services are trusted.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Apache Fesod (Incubating) fesod-sheet 2.0.2-incubating. It allows bypassing SSRF protection through DNS rebinding. When an application accepts an attacker-controlled image URL for spreadsheet writing, the converter checks the hostname's resolved IP addresses but then opens a new connection that can resolve the hostname again. An attacker controlling DNS responses may cause the connection to reach a restricted address after validation.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SSRF vulnerability via DNS rebinding bypass requires checking if Apache Fesod (Incubating) versions before 2.1.0-incubating allow remote URL image fetching without proper host validation. Inspect server logs for outbound connections to unexpected internal or restricted addresses after validating hostnames. Use network monitoring tools to detect DNS rebinding attempts or connections to disallowed hosts.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability could allow an attacker to trick the server into making unauthorized requests to internal systems or restricted addresses. If your application processes user-provided image URLs in spreadsheets, an attacker might access internal services, exfiltrate data, or perform actions on behalf of the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in data breaches, non-compliance with data protection obligations, and potential regulatory penalties due to insufficient access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to Apache Fesod (Incubating) 2.1.0-incubating or later, which disables remote URL image fetching by default. If enabling this feature, configure an exact-host allowlist for trusted hostnames. Ensure DNS and HTTP services for allowed hosts are secure to prevent rebinding attacks. Disable remote URL image fetching if not required.
