Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in Keycloak's identity management service. A realm administrator with a read-only role can access the primary secret of any confidential client, which should be restricted. This exposed secret allows impersonation of the client to gain unauthorized access to its service account permissions.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check Keycloak logs for unauthorized access to client secrets via installation provider or client registration endpoints. Look for requests to /auth/admin/realms/{realm}/clients/{client-id}/client-secret or similar paths by users with the realm-management:view-clients role. Monitor for cleartext secrets in responses.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with the realm-management:view-clients role could retrieve client secrets and impersonate clients to access their permissions. This could lead to unauthorized data access, service manipulation, or privilege escalation within the affected system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using Keycloak may face compliance violations if client secrets are exposed, potentially resulting in legal and regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply available patches from Keycloak if available. Restrict the realm-management:view-clients role to only necessary users. Review and rotate all confidential client secrets. Monitor endpoints for unusual access patterns. Consider disabling affected endpoints if mitigation is not feasible.
