Sensitive Information Exposure in Modula Image Gallery WordPress Plugin

Description

The Modula Image Gallery – Photo Grid & Video Gallery plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Sensitive Information Exposure in all versions up to, and including, 3.0.11 via the 'id (post ID in /wp-json/wp/v2/modula-gallery/{id}) or none for collection route' parameter. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to extract the plaintext Password Protect password and username for every published gallery from the modulaSettings REST field. The plugin's own /wp-json/modula/v2/gallery/{id}/settings endpoint correctly redacts the password for unauthenticated callers via redact_settings_for_public(), but no equivalent redaction is applied on the core /wp-json/wp/v2/modula-gallery path exposed by show_in_rest=true CPT registration.

Executive Summary

The Modula Image Gallery WordPress plugin up to version 3.0.11 has a flaw that exposes sensitive information. Unauthenticated attackers can retrieve plaintext passwords and usernames for every published gallery by accessing specific API endpoints with a post ID or collection route parameter. The plugin fails to redact this data on the core WordPress REST endpoint, even though it does so on its own endpoint.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Modula Image Gallery plugin up to version 3.0.11. Use curl to query the vulnerable REST endpoints: curl -s 'http://yoursite.com/wp-json/wp/v2/modula-gallery/1' or curl -s 'http://yoursite.com/wp-json/modula/v2/gallery/1/settings'. If plaintext passwords or usernames are exposed in responses, the site is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could gain unauthorized access to protected galleries by stealing credentials. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized content exposure, or further exploitation of the WordPress site. The high CVSS score (7.5) indicates significant risk due to low attack complexity and no required privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is exposed due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Modula Image Gallery plugin to the latest version beyond 3.0.11. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily. Restrict access to /wp-json/wp/v2/modula-gallery endpoints via server rules or firewall until patched.
