FFmpeg HLS Demuxer Protocol Bypass Vulnerability

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-107697, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-10-08

Last updated on: 2026-10-08

Assigner: VulnCheck

Description

FFmpeg before 8.1.3 contains a protection mechanism failure in the HLS demuxer that allows attackers to bypass protocol and allowed_extensions restrictions when opening child playlists. Attackers can supply a crafted master playlist whose child playlists use disallowed protocols or non-multimedia local files, making parse_playlist() open resources the HLS security policy should block.

Executive Summary

FFmpeg before version 8.1.3 has a vulnerability in its HLS demuxer where the parse_playlist() function bypasses security checks. Instead of using open_url() which enforces protocol and file-extension restrictions, it directly calls c->ctx->io_open(). This allows attackers to craft a master playlist with child playlists using disallowed protocols or non-multimedia files, bypassing HLS security policies.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the FFmpeg version installed on your system. Run: ffmpeg -version. If the version is below 8.1.3, the system is vulnerable. Additionally, inspect HLS playlist files for unusual child playlists using disallowed protocols or extensions.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to access unauthorized resources on your system by tricking FFmpeg into opening malicious child playlists. This might lead to data leaks, unauthorized file access, or further exploitation depending on the system configuration.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FFmpeg to version 8.1.3 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, apply the patches from the FFmpeg commit 01044d04536e or similar fixes to ensure parse_playlist() uses open_url() for child playlists.
