Description

FFmpeg before 7.1.4 and 8.0.x before 8.0.2 contains a server-side request forgery vulnerability in ff_rtsp_connect() in libavformat/rtsp.c that follows RTSP 3xx redirects without validating the Location URL. Malicious RTSP servers can redirect FFmpeg to internal hosts and ports under other schemes, bypassing -protocol_whitelist, to probe internal network services.

Executive Summary

FFmpeg versions before 7.1.4 and 8.0.x before 8.0.2 have a server-side request forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in the RTSP handling function ff_rtsp_connect(). The issue occurs when FFmpeg follows RTSP 3xx redirects without validating the Location URL. Malicious RTSP servers can redirect FFmpeg to internal hosts or ports using different protocols, bypassing the -protocol_whitelist protection.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to probe internal network services by tricking FFmpeg into making unauthorized requests to internal hosts or ports. This could lead to information disclosure, unauthorized access to sensitive services, or further exploitation of internal systems.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable FFmpeg versions may face compliance violations due to insufficient network access controls.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FFmpeg to version 7.1.4, 8.0.2, or later to address the server-side request forgery vulnerability in RTSP handling.
