Description

ppt2png through 0.0.6 contains an OS command injection vulnerability that allows attackers to execute operating system commands by supplying unsanitized input or output path arguments. Attackers can append shell metacharacters such as ';' to file names passed to child_process.exec() in ppt2png.js, running commands with Node.js process privileges.

Executive Summary

ppt2png through 0.0.6 has an OS command injection flaw where attackers can run arbitrary system commands by inserting shell metacharacters like semicolons into file paths. This happens because the software passes unsanitized inputs to Node.js's child_process.exec() function, which executes commands with the Node.js process privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check if ppt2png version 0.0.6 or earlier is installed by running: npm list ppt2png. If installed, inspect ppt2png.js for unsafe exec() calls handling file paths. Monitor for unexpected child processes spawned by Node.js using commands like ps aux | grep node or lsof -p <node_pid>.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could take full control of your system by executing malicious commands. This could lead to data theft, system damage, or unauthorized access. Even if unoconv is missing, the vulnerability still allows command execution.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations using this software may face compliance breaches and legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update ppt2png to a patched version if available. If not, replace unsafe exec() calls in ppt2png.js with safer alternatives like execFile() or spawn(). Sanitize all input and output paths. Restrict Node.js process permissions and avoid running as root.
