Description

SumatraPDF is a multi-format reader for Windows. In 3.6.1 and earlier, untrusted document paths and PDF link targets are interpolated into notification text that ParseTip() interprets as trusted tip markup. When a user clicks an injected link, ExecuteTipLink() dispatches its CmdExec command and can execute an attacker-selected local program in the user's context. No broader impact is claimed beyond the advisory-supported conditions. No fixed version is available as of this review.

Executive Summary

SumatraPDF 3.6.1 and earlier has a flaw where untrusted document paths and PDF link targets are inserted into notification text. This text is then interpreted as trusted markup by ParseTip(). When a user clicks an injected link, ExecuteTipLink() executes a CmdExec command, potentially running an attacker-selected local program in the user's context.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves untrusted document paths and PDF link targets being interpreted as trusted markup in SumatraPDF 3.6.1 or earlier. Detection requires checking for SumatraPDF installations and reviewing document handling practices. No specific commands are provided in the context to directly detect exploitation.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into clicking a malicious link in a PDF, which would execute arbitrary code on your system. This could lead to unauthorized access, data theft, or further compromise of your device.

Compliance Impact

The vulnerability allows arbitrary local program execution via malicious links in PDFs, which could lead to unauthorized data access or modification. This may violate GDPR's integrity and confidentiality requirements or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Avoid using SumatraPDF 3.6.1 or earlier. Since no fixed version is available, consider switching to an alternative PDF reader until a patch is released.
