Description

The User Profile Builder – Beautiful User Registration Forms, User Profiles & User Role Editor plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'display_name' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 4.0.3 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The payload persists in wp_comments.comment_author independently of the user account, so removing or changing the attacker's display name after the comment is posted does not neutralize the stored script.

Executive Summary

This is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the User Profile Builder WordPress plugin. It allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts via the 'display_name' parameter. The scripts are stored in the WordPress database and execute when users view affected pages.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the User Profile Builder plugin for stored XSS via the 'display_name' parameter. Check comments in wp_comments for malicious scripts in comment_author fields. Review user display names for unsanitized input. Use security plugins like Wordfence to scan for suspicious activity.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect users to malicious sites, or perform actions on their behalf. Since the payload persists even after changing the attacker's display name, the risk remains until the malicious script is manually removed from the database.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties if user data is compromised due to this flaw.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the User Profile Builder plugin to the latest version beyond 4.0.3 to patch the vulnerability. Remove or review any suspicious comments in wp_comments.comment_author that may contain injected scripts. Restrict subscriber-level access to prevent unauthorized modifications.
