Description

The Colibri Page Builder plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.0.390 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. The injected payload survives storage because the widened comment allow-list permits SVG elements with arbitrary data-* attributes; execution occurs because colibri.js, enqueued globally on every front-end page, reads the stored data-target value via jQuery.data() β€” which HTML-entity-decodes it β€” and passes the resulting string directly into jQuery(), which parses a leading '<' as HTML and fires the embedded event handler.

Executive Summary

The Colibri Page Builder plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in versions up to 1.0.390. It occurs due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping in the 'comment' parameter. Attackers can inject malicious scripts that execute when users access infected pages. The payload persists because SVG elements with arbitrary data-* attributes are allowed, and colibri.js processes these unsafely.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Colibri Page Builder plugin version up to 1.0.390 in WordPress. Inspect pages for injected SVG elements with arbitrary data-* attributes in comments. Use WordPress admin panel to review plugin versions and recent changes in page content.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers could inject malicious scripts into pages built with the plugin. When users visit these pages, the scripts execute, potentially stealing cookies, session tokens, or sensitive data. It could also redirect users to phishing sites or deface the website.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, fines, or reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Colibri Page Builder plugin to the latest version. Remove any suspicious SVG elements or scripts from page content. Disable the plugin temporarily if an update is unavailable. Monitor pages for unauthorized changes.
