Description

The Kirki – Freeform Page Builder, Website Builder & Customizer plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Insecure Direct Object Reference in all versions up to, and including, 6.3.2 via the 'context' parameter due to missing validation on a user controlled key. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to expose arbitrary users' sensitive profile data β€” including email address, display name, nicename, registration date, profile image URL, and any string-valued user meta fields such as first name, last name, nickname, description, and custom meta keys β€” via the REST response. Exploitation requires a published page that uses a Kirki template containing at least one user-type dynamic content block; target user IDs are enumerable via standard WordPress REST endpoints, making the only prerequisite the presence of such a template on the site.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Kirki plugin allows unauthenticated attackers to access sensitive user data by exploiting a missing validation in the 'context' parameter. It exposes profile details like email, display name, registration date, and custom meta fields via REST responses. Attackers can enumerate user IDs and retrieve data if a page uses a Kirki template with dynamic content blocks.

Detection Guidance

Check for published pages using Kirki templates with dynamic content blocks. Use WordPress REST endpoints to enumerate user IDs and inspect REST responses for exposed sensitive data like emails or profile fields.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to users' sensitive information, including personal details and metadata. Attackers might use this data for phishing, identity theft, or further attacks. Websites using vulnerable versions of the plugin are at risk of data breaches.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate GDPR and HIPAA by exposing personal data without authorization. GDPR requires protecting user data, and HIPAA mandates safeguarding health-related information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for organizations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Kirki plugin to the latest version beyond 6.3.2. If an update is unavailable, disable the plugin temporarily or restrict access to REST endpoints exposing user data.
