Description

The Fastcache by Host.it plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to authorization bypass in all versions up to, and including, 1.7.5. This is due to the plugin not properly verifying that a user is authorized to perform an action. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to add or remove the plugin's page-cache rewrite rules in the site's root .htaccess file.

Executive Summary

The Fastcache by Host.it WordPress plugin up to version 1.7.5 has an authorization bypass flaw. It fails to verify user permissions before allowing actions. Authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher can modify the plugin's page-cache rewrite rules in the site's .htaccess file.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using the Fastcache by Host.it plugin version 1.7.5 or lower. Inspect the .htaccess file in the site's root directory for unauthorized modifications to cache rewrite rules. Use commands like 'grep -i "Fastcache" /path/to/.htaccess' to search for plugin-related entries.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could alter the .htaccess file to change caching behavior, potentially causing site performance issues or exposing sensitive cached data. This could lead to unauthorized access to cached content or disruption of normal site operations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access to modify the site's .htaccess file, which could potentially alter caching rules or expose sensitive data. This may impact compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if it leads to unauthorized data exposure or improper data handling.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Fastcache plugin to the latest version if available. If no update exists, disable the plugin immediately. Review .htaccess for suspicious changes and revert unauthorized modifications. Ensure subscriber-level users have minimal necessary permissions.
