Stored XSS in SiteOrigin CSS WordPress Plugin

Description

The SiteOrigin CSS plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting via the 'url (comment_author_url)' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 1.6.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is possible because WordPress core's esc_url() preserves HTML entity-encoded characters, allowing a crafted entity-encoded payload in the comment 'Website' field to survive storage and be DOM-decoded by the browser into executable markup at the sink.

Executive Summary

The SiteOrigin CSS WordPress plugin up to version 1.6.7 has a stored DOM-based Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability. It occurs because user input in the 'Website' field of comments is not properly sanitized before storage or escaped before output. WordPress's esc_url() function preserves HTML entities, allowing attackers to inject malicious scripts via crafted payloads that execute when other users view the page.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability involves Stored DOM-Based Cross-Site Scripting in the SiteOrigin CSS plugin. To detect it, inspect WordPress sites using the plugin for suspicious comments with encoded payloads in the 'Website' field. Check plugin versions up to 1.6.7. Review server logs for unusual script injections or unauthorized modifications.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject malicious scripts into pages. When users access these pages, the scripts execute in their browsers, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting to phishing sites, or performing actions on their behalf. This affects all visitors to sites using the vulnerable plugin versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance breaches if user data is compromised through this exploit.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the SiteOrigin CSS plugin to version 1.6.8 or later, which includes fixes for input sanitization and output escaping. Remove any existing malicious scripts from the 'Website' field in comments if the plugin was previously vulnerable.
