Description

The TranslatePress – Translate Multilingual sites with AI Translation plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'comment' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 3.3.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. Exploitation requires the target site to allow unmoderated comment submission on at least one post and to have a secondary language configured β€” both conditions reflect TranslatePress's primary use case.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the TranslatePress WordPress plugin. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'comment' parameter in versions up to 3.3.7 due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The scripts execute when users access infected pages.

Detection Guidance

Check WordPress sites using TranslatePress for unmoderated comments on posts with secondary languages configured. Inspect comment parameters for stored scripts in page content.

Impact Analysis

Unauthenticated attackers can inject harmful scripts into your website. If your site allows unmoderated comments and uses TranslatePress with a secondary language, visitors may have their sessions compromised, data stolen, or malicious actions performed on their behalf.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for protecting user data. If exploited, it may result in unauthorized access to sensitive information, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update TranslatePress to the latest version. Disable unmoderated comment submission on posts with secondary languages. Review and sanitize existing comments for malicious scripts.
