Executive Summary

System Informer before version 4.0.26241.138 has an authorization flaw in its phsvc helper. Local attackers can exploit this by running code in a Microsoft-signed process like rundll32.exe. They connect to SiSvcApiPort and call PhSvcApiCreateService to execute code with SYSTEM privileges.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized use of the phsvc helper or suspicious connections to SiSvcApiPort. Monitor for unexpected SYSTEM-level processes launched by Authenticode-signed binaries like rundll32.exe. Check logs for unusual API calls to PhSvcApiCreateService.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, attackers could gain full control over your system, install malware, steal data, or create backdoors. Since it requires local access, physical or network access to the machine is needed, but the impact is severe once exploited.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access controls. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance failures and legal penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Update System Informer to version 4.0.26241.138 or later to address the authorization vulnerability. Avoid using Authenticode-signed processes to interact with System Informer's phsvc helper.
