Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a reflected cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw in Jivejdon version 5.0. It exists in the application/message/postThread.jsp file and allows attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'to' and 'tag' parameters. The issue arises because user input is not properly encoded, enabling attackers to break out of JavaScript string literals and execute arbitrary code in a victim's browser session.

Detection Guidance

To detect this reflected XSS vulnerability in Jivejdon, inspect HTTP responses for application/message/postThread.jsp when sending crafted requests with parameters like to and tag. Look for unencoded JavaScript execution in user inputs. Use tools like Burp Suite or OWASP ZAP to fuzz these parameters.

Impact Analysis

If you are a user of a vulnerable Jivejdon instance, an attacker could trick you into clicking a specially crafted link. This could lead to session hijacking, theft of sensitive data like cookies or login credentials, or unauthorized actions performed on your behalf. The impact depends on the permissions of the authenticated user.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for safeguarding protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable Jivejdon instances may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Jivejdon to the latest version if available. If not, apply input validation and output encoding to sanitize the to and tag parameters in application/message/postThread.jsp. Restrict user input to expected formats and escape special characters.
