Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, the CONNECT engine's DOS table type used an incorrect boundary check that permitted a one-byte null write beyond a stack buffer at an attacker-controlled offset. An authenticated user able to use the CONNECT engine could cause a crash and potentially remote code execution. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds write flaw in MariaDB's CONNECT storage engine. It allows an authenticated user to write one null byte beyond a stack buffer at a controlled offset when using DOS table types. This occurs due to incorrect boundary checks in versions between 10.6.1 and 10.6.27, 10.11.1 and 10.11.18, 11.4.1 and 11.4.12, 11.8.1 and 11.8.8, 12.3.1 and 12.3.2, and 13.0.1.

Detection Guidance

Check MariaDB server version using 'mysql --version' or 'mariadb --version'. If running versions between 10.6.1-10.6.27, 10.11.1-10.11.18, 11.4.1-11.4.12, 11.8.1-11.8.8, 12.3.1-12.3.2, or 13.0.1, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to crash the MariaDB server or potentially execute arbitrary code remotely. This requires an authenticated user with access to the CONNECT engine. The impact includes service disruption, data corruption, or unauthorized system access if code execution is achieved.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to remote code execution, unauthorized data access, or system crashes. For GDPR, it may result in unauthorized processing or disclosure of personal data, violating Articles 5 and 32. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information, violating the Security Rule's integrity and confidentiality requirements.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade MariaDB to patched versions: 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, or 13.0.2.
  • Disable the CONNECT engine plugin if not required by editing the MariaDB configuration file and removing 'plugin-load-add=ha_connect.so'.
