Description

MariaDB server is a community developed fork of MySQL server. From 10.6.1 until 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2, the qc_info plugin could be confused by a query containing embedded null bytes. Reading information_schema.query_cache_info after such a query was cached could access data beyond the end of a heap-allocated buffer, potentially disclosing adjacent memory or crashing the server. This issue is fixed in versions 10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, and 13.0.2.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is an out-of-bounds (OOB) read flaw in MariaDB's qc_info plugin affecting versions between 10.6.1 and 10.6.27, 10.11.1 and 10.11.18, 11.4.1 and 11.4.12, 11.8.1 and 11.8.8, 12.3.1 and 12.3.2, and 13.0.1. When a query contains a null byte, the plugin misinterprets the database name length, causing it to read beyond the allocated memory buffer. This can disclose adjacent memory or crash the server.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking MariaDB server versions and plugin configurations. Use commands like 'mysql --version' to check the server version. If using vulnerable versions (10.6.1-10.6.27, 10.11.1-10.11.18, 11.4.1-11.4.12, 11.8.1-11.8.8, 12.3.1-12.3.2, 13.0.1), verify if the qc_info plugin is installed with 'SHOW PLUGINS;' in MySQL/MariaDB. Test for null byte handling by executing queries with embedded null bytes and checking for crashes or memory leaks.

Monitor logs for crashes or unusual memory access patterns after executing queries containing null bytes. Use 'SHOW STATUS LIKE 'Uptime';' to check server stability. If the plugin is unnecessary, uninstall it immediately.

Impact Analysis

The impact includes potential disclosure of sensitive memory contents, server crashes, or unauthorized access to data. An attacker with low privileges could exploit this to read beyond intended memory, affecting confidentiality and availability. The attack requires no user interaction and has a moderate CVSS score of 6.4.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data exposure, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. A breach may result in non-compliance, legal penalties, and reputational damage due to potential leakage of sensitive personal or health information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade MariaDB to patched versions (10.6.28, 10.11.19, 11.4.13, 11.8.9, 12.3.3, or 13.0.2) immediately. If upgrading is not possible, uninstall the qc_info plugin using 'UNINSTALL PLUGIN qc_info;' in MySQL/MariaDB. Restrict user privileges to limit access to vulnerable features. Monitor systems for signs of exploitation or unusual activity.
